WRIST AND HAND PAIN

WRIST AND HAND PAIN

(Arthritis, carpal tunnel, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis) At PBRM team we give our patients the strength to overcome wrist and hand pain with regenerative therapy.

What causes wrist and hand pain?

There are many reasons why wrist and hand pain occur. Wrist osteoarthritis is caused by the joint surfaces in your wrist degenerating over time with use, eventually developing into inflammation. Depending on how much deterioration has occurred, the pain can range from being mildly irritating to severely debilitating.

The pain from carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by excessive pressure on your wrist while the inflammation is associated with conditions or injuries that cause swelling. Symptoms are further aggravated by overextending the wrist through movements, positioning and vibrations that cause the median nerve to become compressed and swell up.

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is induced by chronic overuse of your wrist. Repeating a motion that strains the two tendons in your wrist and lower thumb can result in the tendons swelling up. It can also be caused by inflammatory arthritis or direct injury that creates scar tissue in the tendons.

How is wrist and hand pain typically treated?

Early treatment options for hand or wrist pain rely on letting the body’s recovery process take its course. Patients would typically be instructed to modify daily activities that would otherwise cause strain on their hand or wrist, immobilize the affected wrist, take OTC anti-inflammatory medication or undergo physical therapy to treat minor injuries.

In severe cases, physicians may recommend steroid injections or, if surgical options are necessary, procedures to take pressure off of the median nerve. Operations to fuse or remove bones in the wrist or cut the ligaments affected by carpal tunnel syndrome are what patients can expect if the condition worsens enough to require surgery.

However, these treatment plans only help patients temporarily manage the pain, and can’t improve the body’s capabilities to avoid further deterioration. A full recovery can take several months to reach. Invasive options such as cortisone shots or surgery can even intensify the pain by limiting the patient’s range of movement or causing more damage to the hand or wrist.

What are the benefits of PRP treatment?

For patients with hand or wrist pain, regenerative therapy has proven to be an effective treatment plan with its emphasis on enhancing the body’s regenerative qualities. One of the most significant factors in PRP is in its ability to reduce pain. As PRP creates new cells to treat an injury, growth factors help to lessen the pain in the area by repairing tissue afflicted with irritation. By restoring damaged or inflamed tissue, PRP also works to improve hand or wrist functionality so they can not only return to their original state but also stay protected against injuries after they fully recover.
