STEM CELL THERAPY AKA AMNIOTIC ALLOGRAFT INJECTIONS

What is an Amniotic Allograft?

Amniotic allografts are tissue grafts that have the ability to help the body regenerate a variety of different cells and are beneficial in orthopedic surgery, wound repair and accelerated healing. The allografts are derived from the amniotic sac of healthy donors who are pre-screened while pregnant and selected after a strict screening process. The tissue is then cryopreserved and used to treat localized tissue defects and areas of inflammation. They are a rich source of growth factors, hyaluronic acid, proteins and essential nutrients.

What can Amniotic Allografts do?

Because of their growth factors and their low risk of reacting with the immune system, an amniotic allograft injection is useful in treating damaged and inflamed tissue. Their regenerative qualities can shorten the time it takes for patients to recover from injuries or surgical procedures, allowing them to return to normal activities at a faster pace. As such, unique properties of amniotic allografts are not only beneficial towards tissue damage or inflammation but can also improve clinical outcomes for patients to recover quickly from future injuries or medical procedures.

What is the procedure like?

Amniotic allograft injection procedures are performed by delivering the tissue to patients via injection. A needle with the tissue allograft is placed in the targeted area. Cellular components combined with growth factors are delivered to these regions to aid the body’s cells in repairing tissue. They are often used in procedures for osteoarthritis and tendon conditions such as plantar fasciitis and other pathologies.

Are there any risks?

Side effects can happen with any treatment but are minimal with amniotic allograft injections. As with any injection type procedure, there is a risk of localized infection and bruising.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP is a component of blood that contains platelets, growth factors and proteins at a higher concentration than what is typically found in the circulating blood stream. Platelets are blood cell components that assist in clotting, repair injured tissue and also enhance the healing of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The plasma in blood is separated using a centrifuge and the platelets are repurposed for their regenerative qualities and to provide patients with a long-lasting solution to assist in the body’s healing process.

What can PRP do?

PRP therapy is utilized to enhance the recovery process for tendons, ligaments, muscles and/or joints. Because muscles and joints are prone to gradual wear and tear over the years, the likelihood of experiencing pain or inflammation in the tissue of joints and muscles only increases with time. While some may resort to invasive treatments or temporary fixes, PRP therapy is a safer alternative that allows the body to recover at an accelerated pace. Because the procedure uses the patient’s own plasma, it helps to stimulate and accelerate the body’s regenerative factors by tapping into cells that are compatible with their bodies. Rather than temporary relief for orthopedic indications, PRP therapy supports long-term healing for conditions such as chronic tendon injuries, acute muscle injuries, knee arthritis and is also used to assist in hair restoration.

What is procedure for PRP therapy?

After a blood sample is collected from the patient’s arm, the plasma is separated from the other blood components through a centrifuge. The platelet concentrate that is collected is then injected into the site of the injury, often using an ultrasound to accurately guide the injector. The concentrated platelets in plasma act as a natural resource to assist cells in the process of repairing injured tissue.

Are there any risks?

While PRP therapy taps into the body’s natural healing process, there may be a few side effects that are associated with the procedure. The site of the injection can experience some aching or soreness felt deep within the tissue. Even with the precautions that are taken before injecting a patient with PRP, an infection can rarely occur. Occasionally there can be bruising at the site of the injection, but this is infrequent. On a rare occasion, a patient can have an allergic reaction to the treatment.
